Love it or hate it, 21st Century Christmases and all the technological finery is here to stay, and no area has seen a bigger kick in the pants than the gifts market. From extravagant day experiences to the latest hi-tech Christmas gadgets, Christmas gifts are souped up. Move aside bubble bath and comedy slippers, there’s a new daddy in town and his name is Mr. Gadget.
Technologically advanced robo pets, digital photo frames and the latest music players all feature heavily on “want lists”, but for a true gadget lover that’s not even trying. Follow Alice further down the rabbit hole into a wonderful world of Netbooks, HD flat screen TVs and the latest games consoles. It’s enough to make your eyes water. But being bigger and better than the Christmas gifts of yesteryear isn’t the only plus point…
Christmas romances all wrapped up
For one, it’s a lot easier to hide your level of relationship commitment when choosing a Christmas gift for your other half. In the past when Christmas Day wins were measured by the size of your stocking, a smattering of mediocre gifts lit up your lukewarm feelings like the Christmas tree they were badly wrapped under. Today there is a relative smorgasbord of Christmas gadgets that keep your romance cards close to your chest.
A digital camera gives the impression of expense while remaining completely ambiguous. Did you buy a thoughtful Christmas gift or a non-committal show of affection? Your other half will never know, and if the gift is particularly shiny and hi-tech, they’ll forget to ask. It’s called misdirection and is a favourite technique amongst magicians, pickpockets and war generals. At Christmas time it’s a real winner.
The big gesture – no proposal required
Lavishing your other half with Christmas gadgets that look gorgeously hi-tech and expensive also mean you can go for the big gesture without breaking the bank, or proposing. Going all out guns blazing on Christmas day used to involve a bulging stocking, a hoard of medium-sized presents and one uber present. Heck, maybe even a surprise holiday. These days an iPod will do the trick. And if you want to go the extra mile, throw in a docking station. Job done.
Today, Christmas Day can be anything you want it to be. There is a kaleidoscope of Christmas gadgets and shiny new toys that can demonstrate your love and affection or throw your partner off the scent entirely. And the scope for originality is bigger and better than ever! Be creative, the gadget world is your oyster. Just remember one golden rule – if your partner says to “rein it in this year”, be smart.
