Often the reasons given for purchasing a new laptop is that the old one is too slow. That doesn’t necessarily mean as computers get older that they slow down. What could be the reason for your laptop’s performance deterioration over the course of time? High percentage of the reasons are due to settings are faulty, clutter or fragmentation resulting from everyday use.
Here are tips to improve the performance of your laptop without having to invest in a new one.
1. Defrag hard drive – when creating, deleting and downloading files, a computer stores data in pieces in different drive locations rather than in one unit. Because of this the drive becomes fragmented and a considerable amount of data is scattered therefore slows down the performance of the PC significantly. By defragmented your hard drive, tasks will be accomplished more quickly without the necessity of purchasing a larger hard drive.
2. Clean clutter – a lot of unnecessary files can be accumulated over a period of time. By cleaning up the clutter you can recover gigabytes of space on your hard drive.
3. Defrag memory – fragmentation of the memory can occur over time due to programs constantly using and releasing it. When there is high fragmentation of memory, Windows does not have free memory for programs to function efficiently. By defragmenting your RAM you gain memory without having to purchase it
4. Removing windows startup programs that are not necessary – there are numerous software that will unnecessarily load parts of their programs which not only eats memory but also power of the processor.
5. Defrag, clean and compact the registry – incorrect references in the registry can cause computers to lock up and crash, while a bloated and scattered registry slows windows processing down and wastes the system’s memory. When the registry is cleaned and defragmented you can run more programs at one time and will load faster.
6. Turn screensaver off – the screensaver is mistakenly believed to save energy which it does not. Instead when leaving your computer for a period of time to either turn it off or put it on standby.
7. Monitoring devices around laptop – some peripherals that are plugged into your laptop use more energy and depletes batttery and should unplug them when not in use. Opt for wired keyboards and mice as wireless ones are more expensive and require batteries to be regularly purchased.
8. Tune up laptop – a PC that is tuned up will use less energy as it will allocate its resources more efficiently. Keeping the drives free of clutter, defragmenting the registry and memory, removing unnecessary programs out of the memory during startup and employing energy savings methods, will help programs run faster and therefore more will get accomplished. With less power used and a longer lasting battery makes it easier conducting common tasks.
